Canadians gain new freedom as TD lets cardholders use rewards for groceries, travel, and more
Redeeming rewards for last week’s groceries or a recent flight is no longer just a wish for Canadians—it’s now a reality, as flexibility becomes the new standard in loyalty programs.
A recent TD survey of 1,527 Canadians found that four in five (78 percent) want more flexible redemption options from their rewards programs.
Responding to this demand, TD has introduced a feature that allows eligible TD Rewards and Cash Back Credit Cardholders to use their points or cash back toward any purchase on their TD Credit Card.
This includes everything from everyday essentials like groceries and gas to travel expenses such as flights and hotels, making rewards redemptions more versatile and aligned with real spending habits.
The survey, conducted in September 2025, highlights that 80 percent of Canadians are interested in using rewards to pay off past purchases, signalling a strong appetite for more control and flexibility.
Nearly seven in ten (69 percent) rank rewards that never expire as a top priority, but fewer than half (48 percent) say their program delivers on this promise.
Sixty-five percent would redeem rewards for groceries, followed by gas and transportation (37 percent), and online shopping (33 percent).
One in three (33 percent) save rewards for larger goals such as travel or electronics, while 36 percent use them spontaneously as a bonus or freebie.
Anne-Lynne Davidson, vice president, Loyalty Canadian Personal Bank at TD, said, “Canadians told us they want more flexibility and choice in how they use their rewards.”
